Two new jobs

October 1st, 2009

I have been working as a sort of freelance webmaster at the Dark Cosmology Centre for a couple of years now. But as the amount of work varies a lot and I like to spend money, I have been on the lookout for an additional job for some time. A couple of weeks ago two job opportunities suddenly presented themselves to me and I accepted them both without hesitation. And now I suddenly find myself having three jobs.

One of my new jobs is just a regular secretary-like adminstrative job at the Dark Cosmology Centre. But it is nice to have scheduled working hours and a steady income. And an office space with my name on a sign next to the door.

The other job is much more interesting. The Niels Bohr Institue (NBI) is about to launch an almanac on their home page with daily updates about when the Sun and Moon rise/set and what you can see on the night sky. They needed a student to write these daily updates and asked me if I wanted to do it (they had apparently heard good stuff about me :). I like that job. I get to write about astronomy and I can - within reasonable limits - write what I want. Also, the basic information about the Sun and the Moon will be broadcasted on huge plasma screens all over NBI.

As the guys at NBI also gave me an office space I now have two of those. In the same building but on two different floors. That’s pretty cool. :)

Birthday birthday

August 19th, 2009

Today is my 26th birthday - time moves fast!

Using 26 candles on the birthday cake seemed like a dangerous project (after all, I am me) so my original plan was to combine a 2-candle and a 6-candle. But as the local super market only had candles with the numbers 0-5 on them that was a no-go. Luckily plan B turned out to be much more fun as you can see. Best birthday cake ever! :)

Mini Cruise to Oslo

July 29th, 2009

pearl of scandinaviaThis weekend Rasmus and I went on our first vacation together: a mini cruise to Oslo. It seemed like the perfect choice: neither of us had been to Norway before, it wasn’t that expensive and a cruise sounded like a lot of fun. It was!

We checked in Sunday afternoon and settled in in our cosy (small) and charming (windowless) cabin. The name of our ship was “Pearl of Scandinavia” and it was loaded with restaurants, bars, tax-free shops, swimming pools and a cinema.

After a bit of unpacking and a lot of roaming around the ship we went to the restaurant “7 Seas” and dined at a huge buffet. You name it, they had it. Later that evening we went to the “Red and White Wine Bar” where we did a little beer tasting: Erdinger mit Feiner Hefe, Humlefryd and New Stout from the brewery “Skands” and Birkebryg and IPA from the brewery “Skovlyst”. beer

Being Monday most of the museums in Oslo were closed but that turned out to be just our luck, as we instead decided to take the bus south-east and visit Norway’s biggest amusement park “Tusenfryd”. We had a blast there! logsWe started off trying a monstrous roller coaster called “Thunder Coaster”. It was a rush of speed and weightlessness and it was absolutely awesome! We spend the day there trying the different attractions and games, and Rasmus even won me a small Maggie Simpson-doll by shooting hoops. We had so much fun that we barely noticed how the morning drizzle changed into a more determined rainfall. At the end of the day we returned to the ship - wet, exhausted and happy.

china chessAs we had late reservations at a steakhouse we killed the time sitting in a coffee shop, drinking cacao and playing china chess and ludo. We also visited the tax-free shop “Sea Shop” where I bought a pair of pretty earrings and both of us took advantage of the cheap candy.
The steakhouse - Explorer Steakhouse - turned out to have the best steaks I have ever tasted. No kidding. We enjoyed a very nice evening there. Oh yes, and somehow during dinner we grew moustaches.

We arrived back in Copenhagen 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Best vacation ever! :)

BSc in Physics

June 24th, 2009

My last exam is over - I now hold a university degree: bachelor in physics! Hurray! :)

Right after the exam Rasmus took me out for ice cream to celebrate. Sitting in the sun at “Sankt Hans Torv” with a huge ice cream, my boyfriend and a fresh bachelor degree I was feeling pretty happy. Tonight we will hook up with my parents and find a good restaurant in order to celebrate even more.

As I have completely failed to get a summer job I now have a couple of months of vacation to look forward to - way to go me!

In September I will return to the university. I have already signed up for my first master science courses: “General Realtivity and Cosmology” and “Astrobiology”; sounds pretty good, right? And if all goes well I will have a MSc in astronomy in just two years.
